Authentic Renewal of the Church vs. False Renewal: Intellectual Struggles of Joseph Ratzinger in the Years 1965–1966

In some publications one can find a claim about a radical shift of views of Joseph Ratzinger which was supposed to transform a progressive theologian into a conservative guardian of faith. Some even speak of two Ratzingers. and link this change to his becoming a bishop or the prefect of Congregation for the Faith. Others point out that there was a distinct evolution of Ratzinger, linked to the 1968 events. According to the author of the article, in the years 1965–1966 there could have been a certain development in Ratzinger's theology on the renewal of the Church. This research hypothesis has been confronted with the texts of the German theologian. The first part of the article shows the painful experience of Ratzinger who already at the end of the Second Vatican Council saw a misperception of the ideas and documents of the Council. The second part analyses the problem of a false, superficial renewal that is far from the intention of Ratzinger and the Council. Next, the criteria of an authentic renewal formulated by this theologian in the aforementioned period are explored. The problem of a distinction between an authentic and a false renewal seems particularly relevant today.

The article draws attention to the need of a broader perspective on the act of blessing and a lay person in reference to the publication of the Fiducia supplicans Declaration. Blessings can play an important role in the life of a lay person by showing the beauty of God’s creation, developing an attitude of gratitude towards the Creator, helping them to get involved in the matters of the world in the right way, using material goods in the right way, rejecting the temptations of the evil spirit. In particular, they help to appreciate the treasure of human fertility, the value of a numerous offspring. God is the one who gives blessings, but He often does it through people. Also, in many situations lay people can and should bless. From the biblical times, children have been blessed by parents, grandchildren by grandparents, blessings are given at a time of greeting and saying farewell, also at mealtimes. All Christians are called to bless enemies. Blessing God and people is an important part of Christian prayer. The possibility to bless results from common priesthood given at baptism. It is even worth to consider the possibility that people who were not baptized, but who are aware of the existence of God and His creation, can bless. At times giving a blessing is wicked. It can be a praise of moral evil and an encouragement to behave badly, blurring the line between good and evil. Among lay people, it awakens a profound sense of being scandalized.

J. Ratzinger takes into consideration the complexity of Islam, the diversity of attitudes in the scope of the orthodoxy recognized by all Muslims. There are examples of openness to the tolerant rationality and terrorism rooted in religion, peaceful cooperation with Christians as well as cruel persecutions. In the 20th century a revolutionary interpretation has developed which subordinates religion to politics. An open question remains if and to what extent the culture of freedom and democracy can develop in the framework of Islam and if violence can be eradicated to be replaced with respect of human freedom, especially religious freedom. Benedict XVI has expressed the need and the necessity to continue the mutual dialogue. He was the first pope to visit the Muslim mosque Al-Aksa in Jerusalem. The dialogue should serve as a joint testimony of faith in God, peace and profound respect towards human life, recognition of the dignity of man and woman. It worth to meet Muslims in the common search for the truth. By helping those in need Christians and Muslims can give a testimony of God’s love, the creator of all human kind. The return to Christianity in Europe, respect for moral and religious values can help to alleviate the conflict with the world of Islam.

The practice of the Spiritual Communion has existed in the Church at least since the times of Saint Augustine. It is defined as the desire to receive the Eucharist. The value of this practice has been confirmed by the teaching of the Council of Trident, masters of the spiritual life and many popes. It seems that the renewal of this custom can be a response to the problem of the banalisation of the Eucharist and offers a possibility to meet the spiritual needs of the people who cannot take the sacrament of Holy Communion. It can be experienced as a longing for the Lord present in the Eucharist, as well as a sign of solidarity with the sinners.

The Virgin Mary, as the one present next to the cross of her Son, shows compassionate care to people with disabilities who have limited possibilities of working and living independently. She gives them her strength, uplifts them, protects from doubt, loss of hope and temptation of despair. She shows them the way out of loneliness. Mary cares for the eternal salvation of the people with disabilities. At times the blind, the deaf, the mute, the lame and the paralyzed regain their health. She calls on the disciples of Christ to show solidarity, care and attention to people with disabilities. She is a Mother whom it is worth to know and love. She shows the people with disabilities a path of prayer and offering one’s suffering for others. She helps them to see the beauty and meaning of their life. Pilgrimages to Marian shrines are a special way to encounter the Virgin Mary.

Artykuł stanowi próbę spojrzenia na zjawisko starości w perspektywie mariologii. Opierając się na tekstach Pisma Świętego, ojców Kościoła, świętych, a także współczesnych teologów, ukazuje szczególną relację Maryi wobec osób starszych. Matka Boża pomaga tym osobom zbliżyć się do Chrystusa i odkryć w Nim sens swojego życia. Wspiera w oczyszczeniu uczuć, w przezwyciężeniu postawy ciągłego niezadowolenia. Umacnia w sytuacji pokus, cierpień i lęków. Umożliwia nawrócenie tym, którzy - wydawało się - ostatecznie odeszli przed laty od Boga. Niekiedy uzdalnia do podejmowania nowych wyzwań. Jest obecna przy człowieku, który przeżywa czas próby i ciemności, jakim jest umieranie. Starszy człowiek może odnaleźć w Maryi oparcie i głęboki pokój.

Zofia Kossak-Szczucka znana powieściopisarka, współzałożycielka Rady Pomocy Żydom Żegota, w latach II wojny światowej aresztowana przez gestapo, doświadczyła więzienia na Pawiaku i w niemieckim obozie koncentracyjnym Auschwitz-Birkenau. W swojej twórczości literackiej starała się przekazać pamięć o ofiarach obozów. Pragnęła pokazać nie tylko szczegóły obozowego życia, ogrom cierpienia, ale także życie duchowe, motywacje, świat wartości religijnych, rzeczywistość, dzięki której tak wielu Polaków zachowało w tak skrajnie trudnej sytuacji swoją godność i nie dało się złamać. Zwracała uwagę na rolę życiowego optymizmu, odwagę działania w sytuacji stałego zagrożenia życia, miłość do najbliższych, więzy przyjaźni, miłość ojczyzny, ale przede wszystkim wskazywała na znaczenie wiary chrześcijańskiej umożliwiającej przyjęcie cierpienia bez poddania się rozpaczy, egocentryzmowi czy nienawiści.

The article is an attempt to answer the question in what way is Virgin Mary the One who helps humans to accept the reality of death with an open mind and in such a way that makes them grow as well as brings them closer to truth and goodness. This topic seems to be especially relevant in situations in which one tries to escape the very thought of death and at the same time Marian devotion tends to be marginalized. Mary accompanies those who are experiencing their own death or whose loved ones are passing away. Just as she was present at the Golgotha under her Son’s cross, she is present at the end of the earthly life of her adopted children. She protects them from despair, anger and indifference. She helps the witnesses of faith to endure the experience of martyrdom. She encourages sinners to repent. Mary provides comfort in times of spiritual battle. She shows the path of love which retains nothing just for its own sake. She encourages people to support the dying. She invites us to discover the meaning of life and death in Christ. The author tries to reveal various dimensions of the experience of death by combining anthropological and Mariological reflection.
Polskie zwyczaje związane z umieraniem, a kształtowanie tożsamości w świetle życia i twórczości Zofii Kossak

W twórczości Zofii Kossak spotykamy liczne opisy polskich zwyczajów związanych z umieraniem. Ukazuje ona między innymi znaczenie obecności przy umierającym, umierania jako czasu pojednania, śmierci we własnym domu, czuwania przy ciele zmarłego, obrzędów pogrzebu, stypy, Dnia Zadusznego i innych form pamięci o zmarłym. W perspektywie autorki te zwyczaje wypływają z rozumienia człowieka jako osoby żyjącej we wspólnocie. Pomagają człowiekowi odkrywać związek z żyjącymi wcześniej pokoleniami, z rodziną, sąsiadami, regionem i krajem. Chronią przed poczuciem wyobcowania, cynizmem, chronicznym lękiem, pragnieniem zemsty, rozpaczą. Zofia Kossak z szacunkiem odnosi się do zwyczajów chrześcijańskich, ale także wcześniejszych, z których wiele jest nośnikami trwałych wartości. Tym niemniej zwyczaje ludności chłopskiej są ukazywane w niewielkim stopniu.

In his theological writing Joseph Ratzinger often uses imagery from the Bible, the writings of the Church Fathers and liturgy but also from literature or from peasant customs expressing Christian faith. By noticing a relationship between Christian sacral art and the mystery of the Incarnation and the Resurrection of Christ, J. Ratziner regards this art as a result of development of Old Covenant traditions. Upon analyzing reasons for iconoclasm he observes that there can be no reconciliation between iconoclasm and Revelation. He also gives a general overview of the theological tradition of icon painting. Elucidating the evolution of understanding of the sacral image traditions of the Eastern and the Western churches he encourages to bring both traditions together. He stresses that sacral images inspire truth and a life of faith. An authentic religious image has its roots in prayer and leads the faithful to prayer. In a theological work images capture the readers attention and aid in a closer understanding of the text because as they often refer to various existential matters. In the end we are all called to become living images of Christ based on the example of the Christian Saints.
